As an English major and an aspiring writer, I find words to hold particular power. Particularly, specific words that, when uttered, or seen, spurn an idea to write an entire poem or story about. Here are some of my favorite words. What are yours?
Quirk
Whimsical
Subterfuge
Madcap
Capricious
Flex
Sinew
Symmetric
My next challenge will be to write a poem with all these words incorporated into it. Think it can be done?
You could have used quirk for Jenny Mattock's weekly prompt, which is the letter Q. She great for helping to stimulate ideas to develop later...

Thank you Sandra! I am now following her blog. I will get in on the next one...Cheers!
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer!
ReplyDeleteWell, I took it as a challenge to use the words. Here's my poetic offering:
There was a young man with a quirk.
Oft times they called him a Jerk!
His madcap antics amazed,
and capricious acts left you dazed.
Although meant annoy,
his tricks could also bring joy.
A whimsical chap, I assure you.
His quizzical laugh'd amuse, too.
Spin and twirl like a dervish;
he'd make everyone nervous.
Every sinew he'd flex,
your patience he'd vex.
He'd approach from the rear,
By subterfuge, appear.
Symmetric lines he'd encroach,
in secret approach.
By surprise you'd be taken,
appear visibly shaken.
That's when you'd call him a jerk,
this funny young man with a quirk!

Delicious! Wonderful use of the words, and a poignantly humorous poem! Great job. I look forward to trying this out, though I doubt I could do such a concise job of it. Stay tuned!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jennifer, for your comments! Glad you like it. It took me a while to get it. Thought you might not have liked it, but then I thought maybe you were trying to write a poem. Can't wait...
DeleteLosing
ReplyDeleteForgive my capricious quirks,
my madcap subterfuges.
With closed eyes,
I could trace every
swooping curve of your face,
Every flex, bend, and sinew.
Sometimes, symmetry breaches
the immemorial span between our bodies.
Losing, then,
And fear of Losing
Becomes trite,
whimsical
And You,
Paramount.
Ok, so I cheated and used symmetry instead of symmetric but I guess this is the best I could do with the time I had. :)
Ah...a love poem! Very nice! Probably harder to write with the word selection.
DeleteI was going to cheat as I flexed my words few times but, call it a quirk, I wanted to follow the symmetry of the challenge! This was fun!
